Hootsbuddy's Hiatus

Dear readers, both of you...

I have accepted work as a live-in caregiver for someone recovering from a broken ankle. He has other issues as well, but no need to go into them here.

This post is my "Out of the Office" notice for what will probably be the next six or more weeks.

I will try to get internet access to keep up with G-mail, but I definitely won't have time to surf, do homework and put together new posts.

Enjoy my time off. Think of it as the Lord's way of protecting me from making snide comments about soccer moms running for high office, especially when she comes from the only state that may have more oil interests than Texas itself. I tried to resist something snarky about the latest poster child for "abstinence only" but it came out anyway.

I'm excited about the future.

I have no idea what will happen, but in the same way that the Clinton years were at once the fulfillment and last gasps of the Sixties, the Bush years may represent the last shudders of oil which has manipulated our politics since before my birth. All that remains is to figure out how to untangle the tentacles of the insurance industry which has skimmed profits from health care for far too long.

Thanks, Rockhead. Being away from the Internet is an exercise in discipline for me and I think I'm passing the test. It has forced me to enter the world of everyday folks with no input from information outside the common media. It's like going on a diet without sugar, salt, caffeine or fat. You know, "If it tastes good, spit it out."

I saw a report two days ago that Wilmington, NC has been a test case for finding out what may happen in February when TV sets without cable or satellite will no longer be able to receive signals without a special adapter. Apparently tons of people still get what passes for information via that primitive source. Many more than I ever imagined. Boy, it's easy to live in a fool's paradise when you spend too much time on the internet.

Another report I saw from Ohio told about the vast number of people who still think Obama is a Muslim and are still frozen somewhere in time about a year ago. When I checked my email I found another long comment for the "What is Obama's Religion?" post that fairly reeked of the same kind of ignorance. Until now I have not rejected any comments to that thread, although a few have had to be amended before being published, but this time I simply don't have time or patience to reply to this recurring crock of ignornace so it will remain unpublished until I get around to addressing it constructively.

This morning a report about Sarah Palin depicted her as a near Puritan in her firm conviction that she and God Himself are both on the right side of most issues. She is speaking the truth when she claims to have gone after corruption and ethics transgressions in Alaska. She's the living embodiment of that old saying that fools step in where angels fear to tread, except in this case she is the angel of God and the fools are the political types who think they are invulnerable to the wrath of God, particularly when it comes from a woman scorned.

At the moment I have the feeling that she walks the earth with a level of righteous certainty that makes that of George Bush look tame by comparison. If McCain becomes our next president I will pray for his continued good health. Frankly, I don't think he knows what he has on his hands with this woman. The comment that sticks in my mind is "She will shake hands with the Devil but she won't do business with him."

Sorry, folks, but politics is the very art of doing business with the Devil. Anyone who thinks otherwise is in for a Holy War and history teaches us how those turn out.

I wish I had more that a twelve-hour break from my work commitment, because I have lots to say, but time doesn't permit.

Lipstick has become the latest in a never-ending sequence of not-so-silent signals that this uppity black guy wanting to be president just doesn't know his place. The whole mess makes me roll my eyes in disbelief.
